Metcalfe, Knowles Demand Immediate Action: Let Voters Decide on Reducing Legislature
A news conference called in the morning by the chairman of the House State Government Committee, Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry Township, and the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jerry Knowles, R-Tamaqua, covered a lot of the same territory first explored when the bill was debated in the House earlier this year. Accompanied by several of their colleagues, Metcalfe and Knowles sought to put pressure on Speaker Mike Turzai and Majority Leader Dave Reed to bring HB153 up for a vote.
“Now we saw this sweep through the elections [in 2016], and this call to drain the swamp in [Washington] D.C.,” Metcalfe said. “We have our own little swamp here in Harrisburg. And I think as you talk to people, I think what they see as part of the swamp is a lack of integrity in people who are supposed to be serving their fellow citizens in a leadership capacity. Today is all about integrity.”
The legislation would put a constitutional amendment on this fall’s ballot asking voters if they want to reduce the size of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 203 members to 151.
